Project 4 Final Booklet & Conclusion

I have now developed a booklet to represent the system I have developed for the Harmon Fine Arts Center. The booklet attempts to describe the current situation of navigating the building. It then explains my research and initial approaches, and finally displays executions of the signage and wayfinding concepts.

This project presented one of the more complex challenges I have had in a design course. The Harmon Fine Arts center is riddled with inconsistencies and quirks that cause navigation to be a nightmare. I knew I needed to develop a fairly universal system that could be applied to all of the strange areas within the building. I found similarities within building a wayfinding system and building a brand identity. Both rely heavily on simplicity and consistency.

As I conclude the project, I actually believe that my solution could be practically applied to the building, and that it would make the space sensible and intuitive to visitors. After dealing with such a difficult space, I now am confident that I could tackle a wayfinding assignment in a real-world setting and then pitch a successful solution to a real client. The research I conducted for this project will stay with me as I will continue to consider all of the seemingly insignificant passing interactions my work can improve or address.

Progress for Critique: Project 4

I tried to implement the inspiration I found in my last posting within my signage explorations. After attempting several different system ideas, I settled on one concept. It uses different modular elements to become applicable in a variety of situations. I have also begun to develop the maps for each floor. I want to use minimal text matched with strong color coding and iconography for easy navigation.
